David Goodheim is a composer and performer of music in various styles and disciplines born and raised in Colorado. After studying piano and woodwinds in his youth, David began more sustained and serious study of music on the guitar at the age of 14. David trained privately and learned within a multitude of styles important in guitar including rock, blues, jazz, improvisatory music, folk, finger style, and finally and most recently, classical guitar. During his time as an undergraduate student at the University of Colorado at Boulder in Biological Sciences between 2001 and 2005, David was initiated into studies of the classical music of Northern India on the sitar with Ustad Roshan Jamal Bhartiya. After two years of private study, and switching to the fretless lute of Northern India, the Sarod, David met and began studying sarod with Pandit Rajeev Taranath. This turning point led David to further his music education by attending the California Institute of the Arts in 2005 where Pt. Taranath was the North Indian music faculty. As a Performer/Composer major at CalArts, David furthered his foundation in western music theory and aural skills, and received his first formal training on the classical guitar with Michael Kudirka, and Stuart Fox. After Pt. Taranath retired from the institute, David continued studying the classical music of North India on the sarod with the new and present faculty position, Ustad Aashish Khan. He also began coursework and lessons studying and composing western art-music and 20th/21st century music with Michael Jon Fink, Barry Schrader, and Michael Pisaro. In 2008 David received his B.F.A. from California Institute of the Arts and his B.A. from the University of Colorado. Presently, David is working on several compositions for local performance ensembles, practicing and teaching guitar in the Boulder area, and studying sarod and North Indian classical music with Ustad Roshan Jamal Bhartiya and Ustad Aashish Khan.
