Instructor - Kellan Toohey

Kellan Toohey is an avid performer whose varied career includes recitals and solo appearances, chamber music, teaching, and orchestral playing. He recently earned his master's degree in clarinet performance at the University of Northern Colorado, studying with Bil Jackson. In May 2009 he graduated with high honors as a Bachelor of Music student in clarinet performance at the University of Colorado, where he studied with Daniel Silver. His other teachers have included Steve Cohen, Karen Dusek, Shannon Scott, and Bradford Behn.

An active orchestral player, Mr. Toohey currently holds the position of Assistant Principal clarinetist in the Wyoming Symphony. and also in the Boulder Chamber Orchestra. He was co-principal clarinetist in the Denver Young Artists Orchestra from 2003-2007, and in 2005 was awarded the position of Principal clarinet in the ASTA National High School Honor Orchestra. His festival credits include the Aspen Music Festival in 2010 and 2011, the Brevard Music Center summer festival in 2008, and the Eastern Music Festival in 2006 and 2007. He has been featured on local radio broadcasts, including KVOD’s Colorado Spotlight,and was on the roster of the Young Musicians Foundation of Colorado in 2007 and 2008.

Kellan has received numerous awards, including winning the University of Northern Colorado Concerto competition and Angie Southard Performance Competition, as well as the Boulder High School, Boulder Youth Symphony, and Greeley Chamber Orchestra concerto competitions. He was also a prizewinner in the 2008 Boulder Philharmonic Young Artist Competition and a finalist in the Jefferson Symphony and Grand Junction Symphony young artist competitions in 2010. He was a finalist in the DYAO concerto competition in 2005 and 2006, and in the University of Colorado Honors Competition in 2006 and 2008. In addition to his clarinet studies, he is active as a composer and has studied composition with Daniel Kellogg and Keith Waters. In 2005 he was a National Merit Scholarship finalist, and in 2007 was named to the National Dean’s List of college students. Kellan lives with his family on a 38-acre organic farm, and enjoys nature, art, history, literature, and being active in his church.
